Maruti Suzuki Green Vehicle Sales Cross 50% Share in FY26 Driven by CNG Growth
Maruti Suzuki India reported that green vehicles accounted for more than half of its total domestic passenger vehicle sales in FY26, driven by a multi-powertrain strategy designed to provide cleaner mobility options. The carmaker classifies compressed natural gas (CNG) cars, mild hybrids, strong hybrids, and battery-electric vehicles under its green vehicle umbrella. Together, these green vehicles made up 52% of the company's domestic sales during FY26. This performance indicates steady growth from the 48% share recorded a year earlier in FY25, and marks a substantial rise from the 27% share recorded in FY22.
The shift reflects Maruti Suzuki’s strategy of pursuing multiple powertrain technologies simultaneously rather than relying on a single technological route to achieve cleaner mobility. Among the various clean options offered by the company, CNG vehicles have been doing much of the heavy lifting for now. The increasing adoption of CNG cars has been supported by a growing refuelling network and lower running costs when compared to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
Focusing on the CNG segment, CNG vehicles alone accounted for nearly 40% of Maruti Suzuki’s overall domestic sales in FY26. The company sold 7.46 lakh CNG cars during the course of the fiscal year, which represents a 22% increase over the volume recorded in the prior year.
This upward sales trajectory for CNG models continued into the first quarter of FY27, during which sales rose by another 58% to reach 2.2 lakh units. Following this initial quarter, Maruti Suzuki Chairman R C Bhargava stated that he expects sales to reach 9 lakh CNG vehicles in this fiscal year.
The positive sales trend is not confined to Maruti Suzuki alone, as CNG adoption has expanded across India’s wider passenger-vehicle market. CNG’s total share of the domestic passenger-vehicle market in India increased to 21.6% in FY26, rising from 19.3% in FY25, indicating a broader market shift toward cleaner vehicle options.
