Man Dies At Vijay's TVK Rally In Salem Triggering Political Row Over Crowd Safety

A 37-year-old man with a history of heart issues died after collapsing from chest pain at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) political rally in Salem. The incident, which occurred during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign period, has sparked a major political controversy and drawn sharp criticism from rival political parties regarding the event's crowd safety arrangements.
The deceased, who was a known heart patient, reportedly collapsed due to chest pain during the rally organized by the TVK, a party led by Vijay. Following the collapse, the man passed away, raising immediate concerns about the medical and safety measures put in place by the organizers for the large gathering of supporters in Salem.
The incident quickly triggered a fresh political crossfire in Tamil Nadu, with critics using strong rhetoric, including the phrase 'carry own coffin' to describe the situation. Rival political parties, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), questioned the TVK's event management and crowd safety arrangements. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) also raised serious concerns regarding potential fatalities at such large-scale political gatherings ahead of the upcoming elections.
In response to the mounting criticism from the DMK, AIADMK, and BJP, the TVK issued a statement regarding the incident. The party defended its position by stating that they had previously advised individuals who were unwell or facing health issues against attending the rally.
The tragic death has turned into a major point of contention among the state's political factions, with rival parties demanding accountability for the safety lapses, while the TVK maintains that precautions and advisories were shared beforehand to prevent such occurrences during the election campaign period.
