Man Dies After Funeral Brawl in Kadambathur, Kin Protest on Highway

A 25-year-old man who was attacked during a brawl at a funeral in Kadambathur in Tiruvallur district succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as L Manikandan.

According to the Kadambathur police, a group of relatives had gathered at Agram on Tuesday to attend the funeral of an elderly woman who had died of age-related illness. While several people were consuming liquor near the burial ground, an argument broke out among them and quickly escalated into violence.

During the altercation, one of the men allegedly attacked Manikandan in the neck with a weapon. The injured youth was rushed by ambulance to the Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital for emergency medical care. However, he failed to respond to treatment and died of his injuries on Wednesday.

Following the initial attack on Tuesday, the Kadambathur police had registered a case of attempt to murder. Following Manikandan's death, the police altered the charges to murder and intensified their search to track down and arrest the accused.

In the wake of the incident, Manikandan’s relatives staged a road roko on the Tiruvallur-Sunguvarchatram highway, blocking vehicular traffic to demand the immediate arrest of the individuals involved in the fatal attack.

Police officials arrived at the scene and held discussions with the protesting family members. After receiving assurances from the police that the culprits would be arrested soon, the demonstrators withdrew their protest and dispersed.
