Man arrested for setting wife on fire in Muslim Nagar near Ponneri

A 23-year-old autorickshaw driver was arrested by the Ponneri police after he allegedly poured kerosene on his 21-year-old wife and set her on fire during a domestic dispute in Muslim Nagar near Ponneri, Tiruvallur district. The violent incident, which took place on Wednesday night, has left the young woman with severe burn injuries. She is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a government hospital.
The victim, identified as Zubaida, lived with her husband, Nisar, in the Muslim Nagar locality near Ponneri. According to the police, Nisar had recently stopped going to work and had been frequently picking fights and quarrelling with his wife after consuming alcohol.
On Wednesday night, another domestic argument broke out between the couple after Nisar returned to their home in an inebriated state. As the dispute escalated, Nisar locked the main door of the house from the inside, poured kerosene on Zubaida, and set her on fire.
Upon hearing Zubaida’s loud screams from inside the locked house, local neighbours rushed to the residence. The neighbours managed to rescue the young woman from the fire, while Nisar fled the scene immediately after committing the act.
Zubaida was initially rushed by those nearby to the Ponneri Government Hospital for first aid and immediate medical attention. Due to the critical nature of her condition and the severity of her burns, she was later shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where she continues to receive medical treatment.
Following the incident, the Ponneri police registered a case, tracked down the fleeing husband, and arrested Nisar. The local police are currently conducting further investigations into the case.
