Man Arrested For Cheating MGR Nagar Resident Of Rs 23 Lakh With Fake MTC Job Promise

The Job Fraud Investigation Wing of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested a 66-year-old man on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, for allegedly defrauding a resident of MGR Nagar in Chennai of ₹23 lakh by falsely promising to secure an Assistant Engineer job for his son in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).
The accused, identified as Ilanchezhiyan of Ariyalur, was tracked down and arrested in Erode by a special team of the CCB police.
According to police officials, the victim and complainant, 65-year-old S. Srinivasan of MGR Nagar, Chennai, alleged that the fraudulent transactions occurred over a period of two years. Srinivasan stated that Ilanchezhiyan claimed to have close connections with former Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar. Using this claim, the accused assured Srinivasan that he could secure the Assistant Engineer post within the MTC.
Believing the promises made by the accused, Srinivasan reportedly paid a total sum of approximately ₹23 lakh. The money was handed over in multiple instalments between the years 2023 and 2025.
However, after receiving the full amount, Ilanchezhiyan failed to deliver on his promise of securing the government job. Srinivasan also told police that the accused refused to return the money when confronted.
Following the official complaint filed by Srinivasan, the Job Fraud Investigation Wing of the Central Crime Branch registered a criminal case and initiated a detailed probe. A special police team was constituted to trace the accused, who had gone into hiding.
The intensive search operations led the police team to Erode, where Ilanchezhiyan was successfully apprehended on Wednesday.
During the arrest and subsequent search, the police team recovered and seized two fake identity cards from the possession of the accused. One card falsely identified him as a "District Educational Officer", while the other identified him as a "P.E.T." official.
The CCB police have indicated that they suspect Ilanchezhiyan of being involved in similar fraudulent activities targeting other job seekers. Investigators believe he may have cheated several other individuals using the same false promises of securing government jobs. The police are continuing their investigation to uncover the full extent of the scam and locate any other victims.
