Madurantakam By-Election Turnout Drops to 85.99 Percent Amid Peaceful Voting

Madurantakam By-Election Turnout Drops to 85.99 Percent Amid Peaceful Voting

Voter turnout in the Madurantakam by-election fell to 85.99 percent, marking a decline from the 93.22 percent recorded during the Assembly elections held on April 23. Despite visible enthusiasm among young voters who turned out in large numbers, the constituency recorded a lower overall participation figure, while voting proceeded peacefully across all booths.

Polling began at 7:00 am, with men and women queuing up early at most polling stations across the constituency. Many young voters turned out to cast their ballots and were seen happily taking selfies displaying their inked fingers outside the booths. However, the initial momentum did not translate into a higher overall voter turnout by the end of the day.

Turnout figures tracked throughout the day consistently lagged behind those seen in the general assembly elections. By 3:00 pm, the voting percentage stood at 70.31 percent, compared to 72.41 percent recorded at the same time in the 2026 Assembly polls. By 5:00 pm, the turnout reached 83.86 percent, trailing the 87.84 percent recorded at the five o'clock mark during the previous election.

Unlike typical by-polls where voter participation rises due to the distribution of cash and gifts, no such incidents were reported in Madurantakam. Most candidates who had spent heavily and engaged in such practices had lost in the 2026 Assembly elections. In addition, voters viewed the by-election as unlikely to bring about any regime change, in contrast to general elections that determine which party captures power in the state.

A total of 27 candidates contested the by-election. Notably, among the contestants representing major political parties, including the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), DMK, AIADMK, and CPI-M, none had a vote registered in the Madurantakam constituency, with the exception of Naam Thamizhar Katchi (NTK) candidate G. Janakiraman.

Extensive security arrangements were put in place to ensure peaceful voting, deploying 2,700 police personnel alongside 480 CRPF personnel across the area. Polling concluded smoothly without any untoward incidents reported from any part of the constituency. Following the close of voting, electronic voting machines were sealed and transported to the counting centre ahead of the counting scheduled for October 9.
