Madurai Corporation Launches Citywide Greening and Beautification Works

The Madurai Corporation has initiated a major citywide greening and makeover drive using private participation and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, introducing ornamental plantations along the centre medians of Anna Nagar Road and K.K. Nagar Road.

The civic body's engineering, town planning, city health, and education departments are collaborating to plant and maintain tree saplings at various locations identified through surveys. Officials have fixed a target of planting approximately 4.75 lakh saplings, with continuous monitoring underway to ensure their maintenance and growth.

As part of the initial phase, nursery and plantation areas have been established on the Rajaji Park Higher Secondary School campus and the Thamukkam Road officers' quarters campus. In the Vandiyur areas, tree saplings are being planted along the banks of the Vaigai river to boost green cover.

Under the private participation initiative, round-terrain and roundabout beautification projects are being developed and maintained at multiple key intersections. These include locations in front of Dindigul Fatima College, the Thirupparankundram Road junction, the Thirupparankundram Road–Kovil junction, and along Dindigul Road.

In addition to plantation efforts, compound wall beautification and mural works are being carried out below the Natham flyover and in front of Anna Maligai. CSR contributions are also being utilised to maintain flyovers and 14 Amma canteens operated by the Corporation across the city.

Furthermore, the civic body has deployed CSR funds to maintain the area situated directly in front of the east tower of the Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman temple, along with the adjacent Meenakshi Park.
