MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai to Host Historic Big Bash League Opener

The iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will make cricket history on December 12 when it hosts the opening match of Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades. The fixture marks the first time a match from a foreign franchise league will be held in India, as well as the first BBL game played outside of Australia.

The match is scheduled to start at 2:40 PM local time (8:10 PM AEST) at the Chennai stadium. Though played in India, the game will officially count as a home fixture for the Melbourne Renegades, who will face the defending champion Perth Scorchers.

Cricket Australia officially confirmed the fixture in a release on Friday. The league anticipates that the historic clash in Chennai will become the most-watched game in the history of the Big Bash League. Currently, the eight-team BBL ranks as one of the most-followed domestic T20 leagues in the world, second only to the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The fixture, which is currently a one-off arrangement, was formally announced on Friday during an event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The announcement was attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming match in Chennai. "I am happy that a Big Bash League match will be organised in India, in Chennai," Modi said. He noted that any sporting league conducting matches in India is guaranteed to reach a large audience and attract massive viewership.

Local cricket fans in Chennai will now have the unique opportunity to witness the opening of the Australian T20 tournament directly from the stands of the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
