Left Parties To Contest Tamil Nadu Rural Local Body Elections Independently

CHENNAI — CPI state secretary M Veerapandian announced on Monday that the Left parties will contest the upcoming rural local body elections in Tamil Nadu independently to test their organizational strength. Speaking in Chennai, Veerapandian also alleged that "horse-trading" of MLAs is currently taking place in the state, calling it a crisis for democracy and a betrayal of the people's mandate.
The Left Front, which comprises the CPI, CPM, and CPI (ML), intends to retain its independent political identity through this decision. Veerapandian stated that the alliance is prepared to adopt the same independent strategy in future elections if political circumstances warrant it. However, the front has not yet decided whether to contest the upcoming byelections in Tamil Nadu, noting that a decision will be made closer to the polls based on the prevailing situation.
Addressing the alleged horse-trading of legislators, Veerapandian expressed concern that the practice has gradually spread to Tamil Nadu from northern Indian states. He alleged that those in power are resorting to these practices to protect their political interests and remain in office. He described the shifting of sides by MLAs shortly after elections as a violation of political ethics.
While the CPI has extended outside support to the TVK government, Veerapandian clarified that this support was not for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay or his party. Instead, he stated the decision was made to uphold the democratic mandate and prevent the imposition of governor's rule. He emphasized that the Left Front aims to protect democracy without compromising its core ideology, and has no intention of destabilizing or putting pressure on the government.
Regarding a recent speech by Chief Minister Vijay in Karur, Veerapandian remarked that the government still appeared to be in "election" mode. He urged the Chief Minister and opposition leaders to refrain from speeches and gestures that go against democratic values, while praising former Chief Minister M K Stalin for displaying political maturity and statesmanship.
