L Block Anna Nagar Residents Complain of Sewage Contamination in Drinking Water

Residents of L Block in Anna Nagar have raised complaints regarding the contamination of drinking water with sewage, according to Ward 104 councillor T.V. Shemmozhi. The civic issue has brought attention to the deteriorating state of water supply lines in the neighbourhood, where water pipelines laid more than 40 years ago require urgent restoration.

Councillor Shemmozhi highlighted the potential public health risk posed by the contaminated drinking water in Anna Nagar. He stated that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Metrowater have to coordinate directly to resolve such civic issues and fix the aging pipeline network.

The issue in Anna Nagar reflects a wider pattern of complaints across the city, where residents have taken to social media to report sewage contamination in their drinking water supplies. Former councillor Mangala Raj noted that sewage contamination of water has also been reported in areas such as Taramani.

Specific complaints on social media highlighted additional affected areas along East Coast Road. In one post, a resident complained about suspected sewage contamination of water at a residential complex located on ECR in Thiruvanmiyur.

In another social media post, a user reported that over 50 staff members who arrived for a function from various locations across Tamil Nadu suffered from food poisoning, most likely linked to hotel food on ECR. The individual instructed staff experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea to seek treatment at the government hospital, noting that the health of staff is of paramount interest and calling it a serious issue that should be avoided henceforth.

Addressing the reports, civic officials said the incidents may be isolated. Officials advised residents to drink only boiled water, warning that home Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants can easily become contaminated.
