Kodungaiyur Residents Protest at Perambur MLA Office Over Civic Infrastructure

A group of residents gathered at the Perambur MLA office to protest against delays in the development of basic civic infrastructure in parts of Kodungaiyur.
The protesters demanded the creation of essential amenities, including roads, streetlights, and a sewer network in the Bala Avenue Residential Area, Vedanta Murugappa Nayakkan Street, and Selavoyal within Ward 36.
Residents stated that they have regularly paid property tax to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for houses built in the layout and requested the government resolve issues tied to ongoing litigation. Highlighting the sanitation challenges, resident Varun Kumar noted that sewage stagnation has created serious public health concerns and heightened the risk of communicable diseases among local children.
Ravi Kumar, another resident, said the community approached the MLA office in hopes of securing basic infrastructure for the 150 families living in the neighborhood. Women who participated in the demonstration placed a particular emphasis on the need for streetlights in the area.
Officials have asked the residents to wait two weeks for the issue to be addressed. A senior GCC official stated that the layout is unapproved, a civil case remains pending, and one of the parties involved has obtained a stay order. Following the protest, the Chennai Corporation zonal officer and the Housing Board Chairman held talks with the residents.
