Kasturba Nagar Residents in Adyar Demand Replacement of Faulty Transformer

Residents of Kasturba Nagar in Adyar are demanding the immediate replacement of a hazardous power transformer on 8th Main Road following repeated fire incidents, severe voltage fluctuations, and sudden blackouts.
According to residents, the equipment was installed near door number 14 on 8th Main Road twenty years ago and also serves the adjacent 7th Main Road. Around 300 families in the neighbourhood are currently affected by the deteriorating condition of the infrastructure. Despite submitting repeated petitions to the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) over the past four years, residents report that no action has been taken.
D Balaji, vice president of the Adyar Kasturba Nagar South Residents Welfare Association, highlighted the ongoing hazards faced by the community. He noted that the transformer catches fire on a monthly basis, creating persistent panic among locals.
The severe power fluctuations have also resulted in damage to household appliances across the street. Balaji stated that erratic voltages forced him to replace his television twice within five years, leaving him on his third television set.
Beyond damaged appliances, the frequent power disruptions have disrupted elevator operations in several multi-storey apartment complexes in the area. Elevators regularly stall between floors during outages, forcing neighbours to carry out rescue operations for individuals trapped inside.
