K Annamalai Resigns From BJP To Launch New Political Party

On Friday, June 5, 2026, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai announced his resignation from the party to launch a new political movement, drawing crowds of supporters to the Chennai airport to welcome him. Annamalai declared that his new political platform would contest the next Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, aiming to bring a new kind of politics to the state.
Annamalai revealed that he had previously informed the BJP leadership of his intention to resign on December 4, 2025, but was requested to remain in his post until the state elections were over. He stated that he chose to exit the party in a dignified manner to pursue a broader political vision, citing a constant personal conflict over whether he was "a BJP person or a Tamilian."
Following Annamalai's announcement, several key BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu resigned from their posts to join his new movement. Veda Subramanyam, the former BJP working president, resigned and stated that it was his duty to stand with Annamalai to achieve his goals for the state.
Tamil Nadu BJP vice-president Karu Nagarajan also resigned along with his supporters to back the new venture. Additionally, Abhilash Gopinath, the BJP Yuva Morcha state legal convener, tendered his resignation, writing that his decision was driven by his conviction to follow Annamalai's leadership and integrity.
In response to the departures, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran stated that Annamalai's exit would not cause any loss or setback to the BJP, describing it as the biggest party in the world. He added that the party would remain steadfast in its ideology and noted that anyone is free to start a political party in a democracy.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Karti P. Chidambaram reacted to the news, calling Annamalai's exit a gutsy move. Chidambaram remarked that the BJP has limited acceptance in Tamil Nadu and suggested that Annamalai had originally joined the BJP only because actor Rajinikanth did not form a political party.
Annamalai has urged common citizens and youth to join his movement and register on the platform's website to receive training and guidance for future political participation.
