K Annamalai Resigns From BJP To Launch New Political Movement In Tamil Nadu

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai announced his resignation from the party on Friday in Chennai to launch a new political movement that will contest the next state Assembly elections. The high-profile exit triggered immediate support from key state leaders and drew crowds of supporters who gathered at the Chennai airport to welcome him.
Annamalai revealed that he had initially communicated his intention to resign to the party leadership on December 4, 2025, but was asked to remain in his post until the elections concluded. Addressing supporters, he stated that he chose to leave the BJP in a dignified manner to pursue a different political vision and address a constant conflict over whether he was a BJP person or a Tamilian.
Following Annamalai's announcement, several prominent BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu resigned from their positions to join his new political platform. Former BJP working president Veda Subramanyam resigned and voiced his support, calling Annamalai a vibrant leader needed to lead Tamil Nadu politics.
Tamil Nadu BJP vice-president Karu Nagarajan and his supporters also resigned from the party's primary membership to back the new movement. Additionally, Abhilash Gopinath, the BJP Yuva Morcha state legal convener, stepped down, citing Annamalai's integrity and leadership as his inspiration.
To organize the new movement, Annamalai urged the public and the youth to register on the website wetheleader.org, stating that inexperienced participants would receive training and guidance to contest the next elections.
The state BJP leadership downplayed the resignation. Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran stated that Annamalai's exit would not cause any loss or setback to the party. Telangana BJP spokesperson NV Subhash echoed this sentiment, though he expressed hope that Annamalai would eventually return.
Congress leader Karti P. Chidambaram described the resignation as a gutsy move that had been in the offing for a long time, claiming that the BJP has limited acceptance in the state.
