IndiGo Kolkata-Chennai Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Oil Leak

An IndiGo flight carrying 229 people from Kolkata made a successful emergency landing at the Chennai domestic airport late Tuesday night following a left-side engine malfunction and an oil leak during its approach. All 222 passengers and seven crew members on board escaped unhurt and disembarked safely after touchdown.

The technical issue occurred around 11:30 pm as the aircraft was preparing to land. Upon detecting the snag and accompanying oil leak in the left-side engine, the pilot immediately alerted Chennai Air Traffic Control (ATC) to request an emergency landing.

Following the pilot's distress call, an emergency was declared on the runway. Airport authorities initiated precautionary measures, deploying fire tenders, medical teams, and emergency security personnel to stand by on the airfield.

While emergency arrangements were being put in place on the ground, the aircraft remained airborne and circled the airport. Once all safety measures were complete, ATC cleared the flight for landing, and the aircraft touched down safely at approximately 11:37 pm.

After all passengers and crew disembarked from the plane, a team of aircraft engineers conducted an immediate inspection and began efforts to rectify the technical issue. However, preliminary checks indicated that the aircraft was not fit to resume operations immediately and would require further repairs.

Around midnight, officials officially declared the aircraft unserviceable. The plane was subsequently moved to a remote parking area at the airport, where it was stationed for further inspection and maintenance work.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact cause of the engine malfunction and oil leakage.
