IndiGo flight with 224 aboard makes emergency landing in Chennai after engine failure

An IndiGo domestic flight carrying 224 passengers and crew members made a successful emergency landing at Chennai International Airport on Tuesday night after suffering a left engine failure just moments before touchdown.

IndiGo flight 6E-723, operating on the Kolkata to Chennai route, was scheduled to land at the airport around 11:30 p.m. However, around 11:29 p.m., the pilot detected that the left engine of the aircraft had failed. The pilot immediately contacted the air traffic controller at Chennai International Airport to request permission for an immediate emergency landing.

In response to the pilot's emergency declaration, airport authorities immediately declared a full emergency across the facility. Necessary emergency response arrangements were rapidly activated to facilitate the safe touchdown of the aircraft, which included placing emergency fire tenders on standby along the airfield.

The aircraft touched down safely on Runway 25 at 11:37 p.m. Once the plane came to a complete halt, all 224 passengers and crew members were deboarded on a priority basis. The aircraft was then relocated to a remote bay at the airport for detailed examination.

The full emergency condition was officially withdrawn by airport authorities at 11:47 p.m., approximately ten minutes after the safe landing. Airport officials confirmed that overall airport operations remained completely normal following the resolution of the incident.

In an official statement released regarding the event, an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged that the domestic flight had experienced a technical snag shortly before making its landing in Chennai.

"Following standard operating procedures, all relevant authorities were immediately informed, and the pilots made a priority landing at the Chennai International Airport. All customers and crew safely disembarked the aircraft," the IndiGo spokesperson said.

The airline spokesperson further noted that the aircraft is presently undergoing required technical checks and maintenance at the facility. IndiGo confirmed that the plane will only resume its scheduled flight operations after obtaining all necessary clearances from relevant aviation authorities.
