IndiGo Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Chennai After Engine Fails

An IndiGo flight carrying 224 passengers from Kolkata made an emergency landing at Chennai International Airport on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, night after its left engine was found to be inoperative shortly before arrival.

The flight, operating under flight number IndiGo 6E 723, had departed from Kolkata at 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday and was scheduled to land in Chennai at 11:30 p.m., according to an official statement released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Before making its final approach into Chennai, the pilot alerted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the Chennai airport that the aircraft's left engine was inoperative. Upon receiving the warning from the pilot, authorities declared a full emergency at the airport at 11:29 p.m., just one minute prior to the scheduled arrival time.

The Airports Authority of India stated that following the declaration of the full emergency, necessary emergency response arrangements were immediately initiated at the airport in order to facilitate the safe arrival of the aircraft. Emergency procedures were carried out on the ground to ensure that the flight could touch down without further incident.

At 11:37 p.m., the aircraft landed safely at the Chennai airport, bringing all 224 passengers to the ground without injury.

Addressing the emergency landing, IndiGo issued an official statement outlining the sequence of events: “IndiGo flight 6E 723, operating from Kolkata to Chennai on August 11, 2026, experienced a technical snag shortly before landing in Chennai. Following standard operating procedures, all relevant authorities were immediately informed and the pilots made a priority landing at the Chennai International Airport.”

The airline further reported that the aircraft has been taken out of service temporarily. It is currently undergoing necessary checks and maintenance, and it will only resume regular flight operations after obtaining all relevant technical and safety clearances.
