India Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Projected to Cross 3 Lakh Units in 2026

India’s electric passenger vehicle (EPV) market is projected to maintain its strong growth momentum and exceed annual sales of 3 lakh units for the first time in 2026, according to industry data reported in Chennai. This milestone represents a significant increase from last year, when total sales stood at just under 2 lakh units.

So far in 2026, vehicle registrations are already closing in on the 1.5 lakh mark, according to official Vahan data. This steady volume reflects a rising consumer adoption rate for electric cars and SUVs across the country as more buyers transition away from traditional combustion engines.

Over the past four months, average monthly EPV registrations have climbed to approximately 27,000 units, marking a substantial increase over the monthly averages recorded last year. Industry analysts expect this momentum to build further during the second half of the year, which historically benefits from festive season demand and a pipeline of new product launches from various automakers.

Under its optimistic growth scenario, consulting firm Frost & Sullivan projects that annual EPV sales will comfortably cross the 3 lakh-unit threshold by the end of 2026.

According to rating agency Crisil, the growth is being propelled by three key structural factors. The first is a rapid expansion in vehicle choices for consumers. The number of available EPV models in India has doubled to around 20 over the past two fiscal years. This selection is expected to exceed 35 models by the next fiscal year, with a significant number of new launches planned in the competitive sub-Rs 15 lakh price segment.

The other structural drivers include aggressive sales strategies implemented by automobile manufacturers and ongoing improvements in public and private charging infrastructure, which help alleviate consumer concerns. Together, these elements are accelerating the transition toward electric mobility.
