IMD Predicts Heavy Rains Across Northern Tamil Nadu Districts From Monday

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across several northern districts of Tamil Nadu starting Monday, driven by a persisting feeble trough along and off the state's coast.

According to the latest weather bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai on Saturday, isolated places in Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, and Tiruvannamalai districts are likely to receive heavy rains between August 17 and August 19. The weather agency added that heavy rainfall is also expected over the Nilgiris district on August 19 alongside the northern region.

Forecasters also warned of lightning accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour in isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea as squally weather conditions, with wind speeds ranging between 40 and 50 km per hour, are expected to prevail over parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal.

During the 24-hour period ending Saturday night, Chinnakalar in Coimbatore recorded the highest rainfall in the state at nine centimetres, followed by Marakanam in Villupuram district, which registered eight centimetres.

For Chennai city, the meteorological centre projected light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning during the evening or night hours on Sunday.
