IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Across Chennai and 14 Tamil Nadu Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a weather warning forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Chennai and 14 other districts of Tamil Nadu starting Sunday, June 30. The wet spell is attributed to the active southwest monsoon currently prevailing over the region. Along with the heavy downpours, authorities have issued wind and ocean current alerts for coastal areas, advising maritime operators to take precautions.

According to the latest meteorological bulletin, the active monsoon is expected to bring heavy rain to several northern districts of the state. The targeted areas include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. Residents in these northern districts have been advised to prepare for localized disruptions due to the heavy downpours.

In addition to the northern districts, the weather department has forecast heavy rain for western and southern parts of Tamil Nadu. These areas include the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and the ghat areas of Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli.

For Chennai and its immediate suburbs, the weather report indicated that moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, was likely to begin as early as Saturday, June 29. Despite the wet weather, maximum temperatures are expected to remain near normal from Saturday through June 30 across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area.

The India Meteorological Department also issued safety warnings for the maritime community. Fishermen were warned that squally winds with speeds ranging from 45 to 55 kmph are likely to prevail over parts of the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal starting June 29.

Furthermore, the Met Office issued a specific ocean current alert for the coastal areas of Nagapattinam, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Karaikal, and Ramanathapuram. Harbour and marine operations in these coastal zones have been strongly advised to exercise caution due to the rough sea conditions.
