IIT Madras Opens Musical Fountain at Gajendra Circle and Dedicated Gym for Women

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has introduced a series of new student wellness facilities on campus, including a musical fountain at the landmark Gajendra Circle and a dedicated gym for female students. The amenities were formally inaugurated by IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti on Saturday following Independence Day celebrations.
As part of the initiative, Gajendra Circle, one of the central landmarks inside the campus, will host a music and light show accompanied by the water fountain every evening from 7:00 pm to 7:15 pm. The installation is designed to offer a daily space for relaxation and mental rejuvenation for the campus community.
Professor Sathyanarayana N Gummadi, Dean of Students at IIT Madras, stated that the visual and auditory experience is intended to support mental well-being. He noted that listening to music and watching the flow of water is scientifically proven to lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety, and refresh the brain, helping students, faculty members, and other residents recharge amid demanding academic and work schedules.
In addition to the musical fountain, the institute opened an exclusive gymnasium for female students as part of an effort to enhance campus inclusivity. Female students currently account for approximately 30 percent of the 10,000 students residing at IIT Madras. Prior to the launch of the dedicated facility, women on campus were allocated exclusive gym access only between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
The institute also introduced a designated open space dedicated to outside-classroom activities to further encourage holistic student engagement and recreation across the campus.
