The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department in Chennai has invited applications from eligible candidates for the appointment of non-hereditary trustees to 757 temples across Tamil Nadu. The recruitment drive is part of the State government’s ongoing administrative efforts to constitute trustee boards for temples under its control. The deadline for submitting completed applications is August 12, 2026, at 5:45 PM.
The official notification was issued under the guidance of Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay and HR&CE Minister C. Ramesh. The appointments aim to streamline temple administration and fill vacant trustee positions in accordance with the provisions of the HR&CE Act.
Of the 757 temples included in this recruitment drive, 673 are governed under Section 46(1) of the HR&CE Act, while the remaining 84 temples are managed under Section 46(2) of the Act.
To facilitate the application process, the department has made the official notification, the list of eligible temples, eligibility criteria, and application forms available on its website. Interested and eligible candidates can choose to submit their applications online through the department's portal.
Alternatively, applicants can download the prescribed application form, fill it out, and submit it along with all the required supporting documents. These completed physical applications can be submitted in person or sent via Speed Post directly to the office of the respective Joint Commissioner.
Alongside this new recruitment drive, the HR&CE Department has already initiated the process to appoint non-hereditary trustees for 220 temples covered under Section 46(3) of the Act. Additionally, the process is underway for 35 temples governed by specific administrative schemes.
The department has also issued notifications for the appointment of district committee members in 14 districts across the state, with the selection process currently active. The department stated that the entire exercise is designed to ensure that eligible non-hereditary trustees are appointed to manage the temples under its administrative control.
