Health Minister Denies Rapid Swine Flu Spread in Tamil Nadu, Cites Case Numbers

Health Minister K.G. Arunraj on Wednesday denied that swine flu is spreading rapidly across Tamil Nadu, stating that current case figures remain comparable to the previous year. Speaking to media personnel at the airport in Chennai, the minister outlined the current public health situation and assured the public regarding the availability of medical resources.

According to the minister, approximately 1,300 persons have been affected by swine flu, compared to 1,258 cases recorded in August of last year. Because the total number of infections reflects only a marginal difference compared to last year's figures, Arunraj said it could not be concluded that the viral illness is spreading at a rapid pace.

Addressing the diagnostic measures in place, Arunraj explained that the government is actively conducting medical tests for swine flu on patients visiting state hospitals with complaints of fever. He urged the public not to panic, stating that there is nothing to fear as the disease is curable.

The minister added that government hospitals are fully equipped with sufficient stocks of necessary tablets and medications to manage and treat infections.

Beyond public health updates, Arunraj also commented on regional political dynamics and state infrastructure plans while speaking at the airport. He stated that the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) is strongly opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while alleging that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is under pressure to compromise with the BJP due to corruption cases faced by several former DMK ministers.

Regarding infrastructure development in the city, the minister maintained that there is no difference of opinion on the necessity of a new airport for Chennai. He confirmed that the government is currently considering a new site for the project, promising that all development schemes will be executed without causing distress or disruption to the general public. He added that the TVK is prepared to counter the DMK on all issues, while noting that constructive views presented in the Assembly would be met with similar address by the party.
