Gudiyam Caves in Tiruvallur Records 4,040 Trekkers in 18 Months

The Gudiyam caves in Tiruvallur district, situated about an hour's drive from Chennai, have emerged as the most sought-after trekking destination in Tamil Nadu, recording 4,040 trekkers over an 18-month period, according to forest officials.
The trekking location currently ranks among the top five destinations on the Trek TN website. Forest department officials noted that the cave site has attracted both young and older visitors through a combination of easy accessibility and archaeological interest.
The route was officially launched in November 2024 under the Tamil Nadu Wilderness Experiences Corporation. Vismiju Viswanathan, managing director of the corporation, stated that the trek has been graded as 'easy', providing an accessible starting point for first-time hikers.
A team of eight trained guides has been deployed at the site to take visitors through the historical and archaeological significance of the caves, turning the hike into an educational journey.
A notable natural feature of the location is the presence of beehives hanging from the upper reaches of the rock structures. Viswanathan stated that the trained guides strictly ensure that visitors do not disturb these hives during their trek.
To accommodate the steady increase in footfall, district forest authorities have installed several new facilities at the location. The forest department has set up designated resting sheds, public toilets, and a watchtower for visitors.
