Greater Chennai Police Launches Anti-Corruption Special Unit

The Greater Chennai Police has established a dedicated Anti-Corruption Special Unit for the first time to combat and prevent corruption and bribery among police personnel in the city. The new initiative was launched by Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj at the police commissionerate.

Under the new setup, members of the public who are solicited for bribes by police personnel can lodge their complaints directly with the unit. Police Commissioner A. Amalraj stated that the unit was created specifically to prevent police personnel from demanding or accepting bribes in the course of their duties.

Commissioner Amalraj explained that upon receiving a complaint, the unit will conduct a proper inquiry. If a case is established against any officer or constable, appropriate action will be taken against those involved without delay.

Addressing the issue, the police noted that the majority of police personnel, from constables to senior officers, discharge their duties honestly and without accepting bribes. However, the misconduct of a small number of individuals brings disrepute to the entire department.

To facilitate reporting, the department has made a public helpline available. Citizens who are asked for bribes by police personnel in exchange for carrying out their official duties have been requested to report such instances directly or via WhatsApp at 78717 23000. The police emphasized that the identity of all informants will be kept strictly confidential.

The police stated that all complaints received by the unit will be investigated, and immediate action will follow. Commissioner Amalraj also appealed to members of the public not to offer bribes to police personnel under any circumstances.

In addition to launching the helpline and special unit, Commissioner Amalraj held an exclusive meeting with FL-2 and FL-3 bar owners at the Police Commissioner’s Office on Tuesday. During the interaction, he instructed bar owners not to pay bribes to police personnel and urged them to inform him immediately if anyone demanded money. According to sources, police personnel were asked to leave the meeting hall before the Commissioner began his interaction with the bar owners.
