The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) on Friday, July 17, 2026, successfully carried out the destruction of a massive haul of contraband, incinerating 1,339.39 kg of seized ganja. The disposal of the illegal drugs took place at an authorised facility located near Chengalpattu. The destroyed substances had been previously confiscated by law enforcement officers from various police stations across the city of Chennai during multiple anti-drug operations.

The entire disposal operation was managed and executed by the Drug Disposal Committee (DDC). This specialized committee was formed under the directions of the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, A. Amalraj, to handle the safe and legal elimination of seized contraband. The committee was led by Additional Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) A.G. Babu, who supervised the scientific destruction process.

According to police reports, the destroyed contraband comprised 1,339.39 kg of ganja. This significant quantity of narcotic drugs had been seized in connection with 574 separate cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. These cases were registered at various police stations operating across the Chennai metropolitan area, representing a coordinated effort by local police to clamp down on drug-related offenses.

To ensure that the destruction did not pose any health or environmental hazards, the seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances were subjected to scientific incineration. This process was carried out at the authorised facility near Chengalpattu in strict compliance with all environmental laws and legal regulations. The authorities emphasized that the disposal was executed in a manner that met all necessary safety and legal standards required for such materials.

The scientific incineration of the 1,339.39 kg of ganja represents a major step in clearing out seized contraband from police storage. The 574 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at various police stations across Chennai highlight the scale of the police operations that led to these seizures. By destroying the drugs at the authorised facility near Chengalpattu, the Drug Disposal Committee, under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) A.G. Babu and the directions of GCP Commissioner A. Amalraj, ensured that the legal process for these cases was fully completed in accordance with the law.
