GCC to upgrade 20 kilometres of civic infrastructure in Guindy Industrial Estate

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to upgrade 20 kilometres of civic infrastructure in the Guindy Industrial Estate as part of a major 90-kilometre modernization project across three industrial estates in Chennai. The civic body is beginning the process by floating tenders to appoint a consultant who will prepare a detailed project report for the comprehensive revamp of roads, stormwater drains, footpaths, and streetlights.
The infrastructure upgrade in the Guindy and Ambattur estates follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year between the GCC and the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO). Under the terms of the agreement, the GCC took over the maintenance of roads, streetlights, stormwater drains, solid waste management, and other essential civic amenities in both industrial areas for a period of 30 years.
In total, the infrastructure project covers 90 kilometres of roads and civic amenities. This includes approximately 50 kilometres in the Ambattur Industrial Estate, 20 kilometres in the Guindy Industrial Estate, and 20 kilometres in the Vyasarpadi Cooperative Industrial Estate.
According to an official from the GCC’s Bus Route Roads department, the selected consultant will carry out a detailed survey of the three industrial estates to assess the exact infrastructure requirements. Following the survey, the consultant will prepare detailed estimates and a phased implementation plan for the upgrade work.
The inclusion of the Vyasarpadi Cooperative Industrial Estate addresses a long-standing demand. Workers at the estate, which is situated within the Perambur assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, have been actively requesting better civic amenities for several years. The GCC has now integrated the Vyasarpadi estate into the larger upgrade project to address these pending needs.
