GCC to Revamp 10 Chennai Flyover Spaces With Parks and EV Parking

The Greater Chennai Corporation’s Special Projects Wing is set to revamp the spaces under 10 flyovers across the city into usable public spaces, including the flyover near the Government Museum in Egmore. The civic initiative will transform the underbellies of these prominent road structures into active public zones featuring parks, walking tracks, and designated parking lots equipped with electric vehicle charging facilities.
The civic body’s new initiative aims to overhaul spaces that have historically presented a poor visual image of Chennai's major road corridors. Spaces under flyovers catch the eye of motorists and pedestrians more than almost anything else on main thoroughfares, helping form an overall opinion of the road as well as the surrounding area, much like verandahs do for sprawling bungalows.
Despite earlier beautification efforts undertaken by authorities, the spaces under flyovers in Chennai have frequently fared poorly over the years. Many of these areas have showcased squalor rather than beauty, leaving residents to witness gradual deterioration. Previous attempts to green these spaces, such as vertical gardens, repeatedly wilted and deteriorated, with plant containers eventually going empty as the greenery disappeared.
To counter this history of decay, the Greater Chennai Corporation is taking a fresh look at these prominent spaces to turn them into structured, well-utilized community assets. The Special Projects Wing of the GCC will design and execute the redesign across the selected locations to ensure long-term usability.
The space under the Peters Road - Conran Smith Road flyover provides an initial indication of what the project intends to deliver for the city. According to information associated with the Greater Chennai Corporation and familiar with the development, several major flyover locations have been identified as part of this comprehensive civic plan.
Alongside the flyover near the Government Museum in Egmore and the Peters Road - Conran Smith Road structure, the project covers the flyover near the Music Academy, the flyover near the Narada Gana Sabha, the flyover located in Mahalingapuram, and the new flyover situated on North Usman Road.
Through the combination of walking tracks, urban parks, and parking areas fitted with EV charging facilities, the project seeks to provide sustainable public utility while preventing the re-emergence of squalor beneath Chennai’s elevated transit corridors.
