GCC to Build ₹41-Crore Stormwater Drain Along Jawaharlal Nehru Salai

The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to commence construction on a stormwater drain network linking Otteri Nullah Zero Point to the Cooum river along Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, aiming to prevent monsoon inundation across Anna Nagar West and surrounding areas. The project was officially announced during the Tamil Nadu Budget session for the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The new stormwater drain network will be built at an estimated cost of ₹41 crore, supported by financial assistance from a German bank. The infrastructure is designed to direct floodwaters away from key transit corridors and residential pockets during heavy rainfall.

Once completed, the drain is expected to resolve chronic flood-related issues in several western parts of the city, including Anna Nagar West, Villivakkam, Ambattur, Korattur, and Padi. These neighbourhoods have regularly experienced waterlogging during seasonal monsoon spells.

The project forms part of a broader set of urban infrastructure and sanitation initiatives unveiled for Chennai and adjoining local bodies under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) and related municipal schemes.
