GCC to Appoint Consultant for Public Plaza Near Omandurar Government Estate in Chepauk

The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to appoint a private consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report for a landmark public plaza in front of the Omandurar Government Estate on Anna Salai in Chepauk. The new initiative is designed to transform the busy Chepauk area into a pedestrian-friendly space.

As detailed in the tender document, the proposed project area is surrounded by major public institutions and prominent landmarks. Among these landmarks are the University of Madras, the Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital, and the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The site is also located near Kalaivanar Arangam, the Chennai MRTS station, and Marina Beach.

Despite attracting heavy pedestrian movement, the locality currently struggles with several urban design challenges. Pedestrians in the area face fragmented and discontinuous footpaths. Additionally, the locality is characterized by excessive carriageway widths and limited public gathering spaces.

To address these issues, the selected private consultant will prepare a detailed design for the landmark public plaza. The consultant is also tasked with exploring long-term management and maintenance models for the public space.

According to the tender mandates, the appointed consultancy must prepare the Detailed Project Report within two months from the date of signing the agreement.
