GCC Rushes Monsoon Preparedness Works Across Velachery and Flood-Prone Areas

Greater Chennai Corporation is rushing to complete monsoon-preparedness and stormwater drainage works across the city, focusing closely on low-lying and historically flood-prone areas such as Velachery, Madipakkam, and Pallikaranai ahead of the northeast monsoon.

Civic authorities are constructing and cleaning stormwater drains, inspecting canals and waterways, identifying vulnerable locations, and setting up emergency response mechanisms. The civic body has undertaken extensive drainage projects in recent years to address infrastructure gaps and connect neighbourhood drains to larger channels.

Urban planning and disaster-management specialists noted that the true effectiveness of the system depends on continuous connectivity. For stormwater to clear, runoff must flow unobstructed from streets to local drains, then into larger canals, and finally into receiving waterbodies or the sea. Any blockage, missing link, or overflowing outfall point can cause water to back up and flood residential neighbourhoods within hours.

Infrastructure work remains underway across multiple parts of Chennai. In addition to drainage upgrades, roads are being repaired and pending projects are being expedited before rains intensify. Unfinished construction sites and debris pose specific risks, potentially obstructing runoff and creating hazards for road users.

A Greater Chennai Corporation official involved in monsoon preparedness stated that the civic administration is focusing on both physical infrastructure and rapid emergency deployment. The civic body is pre-identifying vulnerable spots to station machinery, personnel, and emergency gear ahead of heavy downpours.

Officials noted that inter-departmental coordination among the Corporation, police, fire and rescue services, and electricity authorities will be critical during intense rainfall, alongside dedicated pumping arrangements in low-lying zones.
