GCC Puts Property Tax Revision on Hold Following Outcry Over Steep Bills

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has put its property tax reassessment exercise on hold after issuing sharply higher tax demands to several homeowners across Chennai, triggering widespread public backlash.

The civic body issued amended tax notices after identifying properties that it believed had been previously under-assessed. The sudden upward revisions resulted in some property owners receiving tax bills that were multiple times higher than their earlier assessments, sparking anger among residents.

In response to the criticism, the GCC maintained that there was no blanket increase in citywide property tax rates. Civic authorities explained that the amended demands were issued solely in cases where property records were being updated or where prior assessments had been found to be in error. The corporation stated that the objective of the exercise was to align tax records with the actual state of the properties rather than enforcing an across-the-board rate hike.

Homeowners, however, contested this reasoning, stating that the distinction between a general tax hike and an individual reassessment is largely academic when final bills jump significantly. Many residents expressed confusion over how the municipal corporation arrived at the new figures and demanded explanations regarding why earlier assessments were now considered incorrect.

Residents also highlighted that because property tax is a recurring household expenditure, any substantial revision poses a serious long-term financial liability rather than a one-time cost. Facing ongoing objections from taxpayers over the calculations and the steep increases, the corporation ultimately halted the revision process.
