GCC Launches Corporate-Style Wellness Training For 350 Officials

The Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday launched a corporate-style workplace wellness training programme for its officials in Chennai. The initiative is aimed at helping government staff cope with workplace stress, fatigue, and the physical and mental demands of long working hours. A total of 350 officials participated on the first day of the newly introduced training sessions.

The wellness sessions are being conducted by Dhruthi Trust. The primary focus of the training is to equip civic officials with the skills required to handle communication with senior officers, contractors, and members of the public in a composed manner. The sessions also focus on helping staff develop the presence of mind needed to respond appropriately in challenging workplace situations without losing their cool.

According to a corporation official, staff members within the Greater Chennai Corporation are frequently placed in difficult operational circumstances. Employees face immediate workplace pressure from higher-ups, along with demanding interactions with contractors who may try to compel officials to act in specific ways. In addition, some staff members face issues while dealing with local MLAs.

The training programme aims to sensitise employees on how to manage these delicate situations effectively. Officials are being trained to escalate such matters through proper official channels rather than giving in to external pressure, ensuring that they respond strictly in accordance with administrative rules.

Beyond workplace communication and stress management, the programme encourages government employees to prioritise their personal wellbeing. The sessions highlight the importance of taking family breaks and using long leave, while actively encouraging staff to travel as a method for maintaining overall health.

Highlighting the heavy workload faced by civic staff, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G S Sameeran noted that officials regularly work from early morning until late at night. He emphasised that staff members are tasked with overseeing various urban development projects while providing essential civic services to nearly one crore residents across the city. Given these extensive responsibilities and daily workload, Sameeran stated that it was essential for officials to pay close attention to both their physical and mental health.
