GCC gives Chennai bulk waste generators 15 days to register online or face fines

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has made online registration mandatory for all bulk waste generators in Chennai, giving them a 15-day deadline to complete the process or face penalties. The civic body introduced this measure to strengthen municipal waste management and improve the segregation of waste at its source.

The new mandate targets all establishments in the city that generate more than 100 kilograms of waste daily. This category includes large residential apartment complexes, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, IT parks, and various commercial establishments. In addition to waste volume, buildings with a built-up area of more than 20,000 square metres and establishments that consume more than 40,000 litres of water per day also qualify as bulk waste generators under the guidelines.

Currently, the GCC has identified 3,203 bulk waste generators across Chennai. However, only 1,944 of these establishments have registered so far, leaving 1,259 bulk waste generators unregistered. To comply with the regulations, these remaining establishments must register on both the GCC portal and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portal within the designated 15-day period.

Establishments that fail to complete the registration process within the deadline will face financial penalties ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. The GCC has already actively penalised violators, collecting ₹5.95 lakh in fines from 120 bulk waste generators during the previous month.

The civic body launched this enforcement drive following persistent concerns over waste disposal practices. Officials noted that several bulk waste generators have been dumping mixed waste directly into the GCC's roadside bins. Under the current rules, these establishments are required to either process the waste on their own premises or hand it over to the GCC through authorised waste collectors.
