GCC Council Passes Resolution Against Commissioner Over Withheld Ward Funds

The Greater Chennai Corporation council has moved a resolution against Commissioner G S Sameeran for failing to release ward councillor funds over the past three months.

Elected representatives across party lines, including members from the DMK, BJP, CPI, and CPI(M), criticised the commissioner and demanded an explanation for the delay. The councillors pointed out that the non-release of funds to which they are entitled has brought civic works to a standstill across several wards for the last four months.

During the council meeting, councillors questioned the rationale behind citing a shortage of municipal funds for local development works while funds remained available for other expenditures, such as building the Chief Minister’s Sea View office and purchasing new cars for MLAs.

Commissioner G S Sameeran watched the council proceedings with a smile and did not respond to the demands raised by the elected representatives.

Mayor R Priya expressed gratitude to all council members for supporting the resolution. She noted a sharp decline in civic business, stating that while 120 resolutions were passed every month during the DMK tenure, the council is currently passing only 10 to 20 resolutions per month.

Voicing strong protest over the administrative impasse, Ward 141 councillor Raja Anbazhagan, son of former MLA J Anbazhagan, urged that all ward councillors should resign en masse.
