GCC Commissioner Orders Faster Monsoon Prep and Civic Works at Ripon Buildings Meeting

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has instructed municipal officials to accelerate ongoing civic infrastructure works and initiate pending projects during a review meeting held at Ripon Buildings on Saturday. The session focused primarily on evaluating precautionary measures ahead of the Northeast monsoon.

During the review, the Commissioner ordered immediate action on key flood-mitigation tasks, including the desilting of stormwater drains, structural improvements to canals, and the systematic pruning of precarious tree branches. Official figures presented at the meeting show that as of July 15, the GCC has constructed 1,016.25 kilometres of stormwater drains against a planned target of 1,126 kilometres, at an estimated cost of ₹5,127.40 crore.

Desilting efforts across the city's primary waterways have resulted in the removal of 16,270 metric tonnes of silt and water hyacinth. The civic body utilized amphibian vehicles and robotic excavators to clear major canals. In addition, maintenance crews have cleaned 68,281 of Chennai's 1,09,975 silt catch pits. To ensure emergency readiness during heavy rain, officials were instructed to maintain high-capacity motor pumps, 215 relief centres, and community kitchens in full operational readiness.

Beyond monsoon preparations, the meeting evaluated the progress of public infrastructure initiatives currently at the detailed project report and tender stages. These planned developments include urban primary health centres, modern bus shelters, resting facilities for gig workers, and integrated sports complexes. The review also covered environmental projects, noting that the restoration of 49 ponds has been completed at an estimated cost of ₹214.02 crore.

In addition to infrastructure oversight, Commissioner Sameeran issued firm directives to civic officials to initiate strict action against unauthorized constructions and the commercial utilization of residential buildings.
