GCC Clears Buckingham Canal Debris Near Kodungaiyur Landfill

The Greater Chennai Corporation has cleared sand and construction debris choking a critical stretch of the Buckingham Canal near the Kodungaiyur landfill in north Chennai ahead of the northeast monsoon.

The civic action was taken after accumulated sand and construction waste reduced the canal’s width by nearly three-fourths, raising serious concerns over potential flooding in the northern parts of the city.

Following a report in July highlighting how the waste was choking the waterway, GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran inspected the site. The corporation subsequently moved in to clear the accumulated debris from the stretch.

According to local residents, water flow along the canal has improved following the cleanup work. The clearance of the obstruction is expected to reduce the impact of monsoon flooding in surrounding residential areas, including Mullai Nagar, Sathya Moorthy Nagar, Udhaya Suriyan Nagar, Ezhil Nagar, and JJR Nagar.
