GCC allows property owners to file objections to revised tax assessments in 15 days

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has invited property owners across Chennai to submit their objections to revised property tax assessments within 15 days of receiving their updated assessment orders.

The exercise is aimed at ensuring accurate assessment of property usage and built-up area. Property owners can submit their grievances or objections, along with supporting documents and evidence, to their concerned Regional Deputy Commissioner (RDC).

According to an official release, the revision process was initially undertaken using information provided by property owners during a self-declaration exercise conducted in 2018. The initiative was subsequently suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The civic body has now resumed the exercise using details furnished by property owners alongside information gathered through re-measurements, geographic information system (GIS) mapping, and satellite imagery.

To lessen the financial burden on property owners, the GCC stated that the revised property tax assessment will take effect from the second half of the 2025-26 financial year, irrespective of the age of the building. The civic body added that objections raised by property owners will be examined by RDCs, and appropriate action will be taken within one month of receipt.
