Four Arrested After 22-Year-Old Youth Dies Following Assault in Thaiyur

A 22-year-old youth from Thaiyur near Kelambakkam died at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital after being assaulted by a gang with machetes, leading to the arrest of four persons so far in connection with the murder.
The deceased, identified as Praveen Kumar of Chinnamma Nagar in Thaiyur, had been in a relationship with a woman from the same locality for three years. The woman's family had opposed their relationship. On August 16, a group of men attacked Praveen with machetes near his house.
Following the violent assault, Praveen was initially admitted to a private hospital in Kelambakkam. He was later shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment on August 20.
The Kelambakkam police had initially registered a case of attempt to murder based on a complaint lodged by Praveen’s mother, Parvathi, 48. Following his death, the police altered the charges to murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police officials, who ruled out an honour killing angle in the murder, arrested four individuals: S Ezhumalai, 43, his son E Gowtham, 18, M Nandhees, 18, and R Manikandan, 32. Gowtham was arrested on Friday. All four suspects have been remanded in judicial custody.
