Former DGPs Shankar Jiwal and Sunil Kumar Resign From State Board Posts in Chennai

In a major administrative transition in Chennai, retired Directors General of Police (DGPs) Shankar Jiwal and Sunil Kumar have resigned from their top government-appointed positions. The resignations, which occurred on Wednesday, follow a change of regime in the state and the ascension of the TVK to power.

Former DGP Shankar Jiwal resigned from his role as the first chairman of the Tamil Nadu Fire Commission. This specific post was newly created by the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, which had accommodated Jiwal in the position in September 2025.

In tandem with Jiwal's departure, three other members of the Tamil Nadu Fire Commission also submitted their resignations on Wednesday. The resigning members of the commission have been identified as Vikraman, Sathyamurthy, and Namachivayam.

In a separate development on the same day, former DGP Sunil Kumar stepped down from his position as the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB). Both Jiwal and Kumar, along with the commission members, had received their appointments during the tenure of the previous DMK administration.

These high-level resignations come amid broader administrative changes initiated by the new government following the change of regime. Sources state that the state government had already begun taking steps to relieve officials who hold key statutory and administrative positions. Among the roles targeted for change are the TNUSRB board chairman, the Tamil Nadu Fire Commission chairman, and the information commissioner.

At present, no official statement has been issued by the government or the officers regarding the immediate reasons for these resignations. However, government sources have indicated that the process to identify and appoint successors to fill the newly vacant positions will be taken up in due course.
