Five Killed, Over 40 Injured in Head-On Bus Collision at Vanjinagar near Kottampatti

Five people were killed and more than 40 others were injured early on Monday morning after a private omni bus travelling from Chennai collided head-on with a state-run government bus at Vanjinagar near Kottampatti in Madurai district.
The private omni bus was on its way from Chennai to Marthandam when the accident occurred. According to officials, the private vehicle allegedly lost control, crossed over the median on the four-lane highway, and crashed directly into the oncoming government bus. The state-run bus was heading in the opposite direction, travelling from Madurai to Tiruchirappalli.
The force of the collision sent the private omni bus veering off the road, where it crashed into a roadside passenger shelter. The impact completely damaged and destroyed the shelter structure.
Authorities have identified the five deceased victims as Chiriya Pushpam, Anand Raj, Surya, Mohammed Yasin, and Abraham.
In addition to the fatalities, more than 40 passengers, including women and children, sustained various injuries in the crash. Emergency responders rushed the injured victims to nearby medical facilities, including the Melur Government Hospital and the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, where they were admitted for treatment.
Following the collision, police personnel, fire and rescue services, and National Highways patrol teams arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. The emergency teams worked to rescue passengers who were trapped inside the damaged buses and coordinated their transfer to the hospitals.
The accident caused severe disruption to traffic on the highway, which was blocked for several hours. Normal vehicle movement was eventually restored after cranes were brought in to remove the heavily damaged buses from the road.
Senior officials, including Madurai Range DIG Abhinav Kumar and Madurai Superintendent of Police Devanathan, visited the spot to inspect the accident site. The local police have launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, focusing on whether it was caused by driver error, over-speeding, or a mechanical failure.
