Filmmaker Bharathiraja Laid to Rest With Full State Honours in Theni

Renowned Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja was laid to rest with full state honours, including a 72-gun salute, in his native town of Theni on Thursday, June 11. The late filmmaker, who breathed his last at the age of 84, was buried near his farmhouse following a solemn procession that began from his residence.

The final rites concluded amidst heavy mourning from his relatives, film artists, political leaders, and many more of his admirers who gathered to pay their final respects. The event marked the end of an era for a director who is widely recognized for having changed the face of Tamil cinema.

Earlier in the day, his mortal remains were taken in a solemn procession. Emotional scenes unfolded as crowds of fans, relatives, and local residents gathered along the route from his residence to the burial site near his farmhouse, all hoping to bid a final farewell to the director.

In recognition of his immense contribution to both cinema and society, the Tamil Nadu government had announced that Bharathiraja would be accorded full state honours. This culminated in an emotional ceremony where a 72-gun salute was presented. Family members stood directly beside the coffin as these honours were rendered.

Several prominent personalities travelled to the town of Theni to pay their final respects to the departed director. Among the notable figures in attendance were actress Raadhika Sarathkumar, politician Seeman, and lyricist Vairamuthu, alongside many other film personalities who joined the family and fans to mourn.

The final rituals for the departed filmmaker ended in the company of his near and dear ones as well as his fans, marking a final farewell to a creator whose artistic work defined generations of cineastes.
