English Lit Graduate Arrested for iPhone Theft at Chromepet Women's Hostel

A 26-year-old English Literature graduate was arrested by the Chromepet police on Tuesday after residents of a women’s hostel in New Colony, Chromepet, detained her for allegedly stealing a high-end iPhone. The accused, identified as Santhoshini of Madurai, was caught when she returned to the hostel premises two days after the mobile phone went missing.

According to the police, the hostel in New Colony houses several working women. Two days ago, an expensive iPhone belonging to one of the residents went missing from the hostel. Following the disappearance of the mobile device, the hostel management lodged an official complaint with the Chromepet police.

Around the time the theft occurred, a young woman had visited the hostel claiming that she was looking for a job. After she left the premises, several residents reportedly began to suspect that she could have been involved in stealing the phone.

On Tuesday, the same woman returned to the New Colony hostel and again enquired about potential employment. During her visit, she interacted with the residents for some time. Suspicious of her repeated presence and behavior, the women in the hostel confronted and questioned her.

During the interaction, the residents allegedly discovered that she was indeed the same person suspected of stealing the iPhone earlier. The hostel residents immediately detained her and handed her over to the responding Chromepet police officers.

During interrogation at the police station, officials identified the woman as Santhoshini, 26, an English Literature graduate hailing from Madurai. Police further disclosed that she had been staying with her brother in Velachery a few months ago.

While in Velachery, Santhoshini was involved in a domestic dispute with her sister-in-law, during which she allegedly assaulted her. Following that incident, the Velachery police had registered a case against her. Santhoshini was produced before a court and was subsequently released on bail prior to the latest incident in Chromepet.

The arrest has caused a stir in the Chromepet area, particularly because the accused holds a degree in English Literature and allegedly resorted to mobile phone theft.
