Engineering Student's Murder Sparks Political Row in Tamil Nadu Assembly

The fatal assault of a 19-year-old mechatronics engineering student has triggered a political controversy in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, with Opposition members demanding an independent, high-level inquiry amid conflicting claims over the motive behind the killing.

Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin raised the issue in the House, demanding accountability after the victim's family alleged that the student was killed for exposing campus drug abuse and ganja trafficking. Minister for School Education, Tamil Development, Information and Publicity A Rajmohan rejected the allegation, stating that preliminary findings pointed to a localised retaliatory clash between student groups. Speaker J C D Prabhakar directed Rajmohan to submit a detailed report during an upcoming call-attention motion.

According to police, eight persons have been arrested in connection with the murder, while a hunt is underway for 11 absconding suspects. Those arrested include B Amudhan (20), M Aravind (21), S Siva Rohith (20), V Mani Balu (20), Santhosh (19), and a minor.

The incident took place on August 10, when the third-year student was intercepted near Malumichampatti and dragged to a nearby ground, where a group assaulted him with iron rods and wooden logs. Though he managed to return to his room, he developed acute respiratory distress later that afternoon and was declared dead at a private hospital. Preliminary post-mortem findings from Singanallur ESI Hospital indicated that severe blunt-force trauma led to fatal internal bleeding and acute respiratory failure.

The victim's father, Kennedy, alleged that his son had exposed drug abuse and ganja trafficking on the college campus. He claimed that college authorities and local police pressured the youth to identify students involved in narcotics and later leaked his identity to the accused.

Police and the college administration have denied any drug-related motive. Investigators stated the attack stemmed from a senior-junior dispute, following suspicions that the victim was involved in a masked phone-snatching and extortion incident on the morning of August 10.

The college management said the victim and another student had been suspended on July 24 after an alleged assault on hostel cook Manoj on July 21. College authorities stated they were unaware he had moved to a rented room near Othakkalmandapam and handed over details of 15 other students to assist the police inquiry.
