Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital to Open New Cathedral Road Flagship Centre in December

Dr Agarwal’s Health Care is preparing to inaugurate its redeveloped flagship facility, the Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital Main Centre on Cathedral Road in Chennai, this December. The opening coincides with the eye care chain entering its 70th year since its founding in the city in 1957.

The original Cathedral Road facility was built in 1976. Fifty years later, the site has been transformed into a new multi-storey healthcare centre spanning more than 10 floors and covering one lakh square feet of space.

Speaking about the organization’s evolution and future plans, Chairman Amar Agarwal stated that the chain operates on a hub-and-spoke healthcare model. In Chennai, the network currently runs 25 hospitals, including three main specialty hubs. Basic cataract surgeries and routine procedures are managed at the network's secondary hospitals, while complex cases are directed to the primary specialty centres.

Across Tamil Nadu, the group manages 88 hospitals and plans to increase this count to 150 across the state over the next five years. Nationally and internationally, the group currently operates approximately 310 hospitals in India and 10 facilities in African countries.

To drive growth, the chain is targeting the rollout of two new hospitals each week this year, with an overall goal of reaching 800 facilities over the next five years. Dr Agarwal’s is also preparing to expand into the Gulf Cooperation Council region with upcoming facility launches in the United Arab Emirates.

The hospital network currently treats more than 25,000 patients per day. The group projects that daily patient capacity will increase to approximately one lakh patients once the network scales to 800 operational facilities.
