Domestic tractor sales rise 19 percent in first quarter as demand defies monsoon fears

Domestic tractor sales in India recorded a strong 19 percent year-on-year growth during the first quarter of the fiscal year, according to industry data reported from Chennai. Despite widespread concerns over a deficient monsoon in several parts of the country, the surge in sales indicates that the demand for farm mechanization has so far remained resilient and largely insulated from weather-related uncertainties.

According to data released by the Tractor & Mechanization Association (TMA), total domestic tractor volumes during the first quarter of the current fiscal year grew to 339,291 units. This is a notable 19 percent increase from the 286,016 units recorded during the corresponding year-ago period.

The robust quarterly performance was supported by strong double-digit growth in June 2026 on both a year-on-year and sequential basis. Total domestic tractor sales grew 12 percent to 126,041 units in June 2026, up from 112,677 units in June 2025. This June figure also represented a 16.5 percent rise compared to the 108,229 units sold in May 2026.

Key industry players contributed to the positive sales momentum. Market leader Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) posted an 18 percent growth in the first quarter, selling 152,426 units. In June 2026 alone, M&M recorded a 12 percent growth with domestic sales of 58,177 units.

International Tractors, which manufactures the Sonalika brand, recorded a 25 percent domestic volume growth in the first quarter, with sales reaching 45,696 units. For the month of June, the manufacturer saw an 18 percent increase, selling 17,674 units.

Escorts Kubota also reported strong double-digit growth during this period. The company registered a 20 percent growth in June and a 23 percent growth overall for the first quarter of the fiscal year.

The steady performance across major manufacturers indicates that the agricultural sector's appetite for tractor acquisition has remained steady, defying the initial anxieties surrounding monsoon performance across various states.
