DMK Expands Party District Units to 110, Chennai to Have 10 Units

DMK president M K Stalin announced a major organizational restructuring on the day he entered his ninth year as party leader, increasing the number of district units across the state from 77 to 110. Under the new layout, Chennai will now consist of 10 district units instead of six, while the Sholinganallur assembly segment will function as a separate district unit due to its population size.

In addition to the changes in the capital, other major centres including Coimbatore, Madurai, and Salem will see their district units expand from three to five. The structural overhaul follows recommendations from an internal DMK panel established to analyze the party's performance in the assembly election and suggest organizational improvements.

According to the restructuring list released by the DMK, the majority of the newly formed district units will now encompass two assembly segments. This marks a shift from the previous arrangement, where each district unit comprised three or more assembly constituencies.

Addressing party workers, Stalin noted that the restructuring was carried out with the long-term welfare of the party in mind and appealed to cadres to back the transition. He stated on social media that adapting to changing times was essential for endurance and expressed confidence in leading the organization to future electoral victories.

Following the announcement, DMK district functionaries have been instructed to demarcate smaller administrative units based on the revised structure and submit their reports within 15 days.

Stalin's statement directed existing district secretaries to convene general council meetings in the presence of representatives deputed from party headquarters. These meetings will prepare and send recommendations for demarcating new town, union, and branch units across the reorganized districts.
