DMK Convenes Principal Executive Committee Meeting on August 22 in Chennai
DMK general secretary Duraimurugan has called a meeting of the party's Principal Executive Committee on Saturday, August 22, at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai. Party president M K Stalin will preside over the meeting scheduled for 10 am at the Kalaignar Arangam.
The notification issued by Duraimurugan stated a single agenda to discuss "the constructive work" to be done by the party. The announcement has triggered discussions regarding a possible revamp of the party structure as the leadership prepares to review organisational performance and implement changes.
The DMK had previously formed a committee to examine the reasons behind its performance in the recent Assembly elections. While the high command reviewed the committee's findings, decisions regarding the flaws highlighted in the report remain pending.
Party circles suggest that organizational changes could affect at least 10 district secretaries following the election results, which saw the TVK secure 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and form the government with support from former DMK allies. Additionally, there are plans under consideration to restructure party districts by placing two Assembly constituencies under a single district to streamline cadre and functionary management ahead of upcoming local body elections, Assembly by-elections, and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.
The executive committee is also scheduled to finalize arrangements for the DMK's traditional 'Mupperum Vizha' celebrations. The annual event marks the birth anniversary of party founder C N Annadurai on September 15, the DMK's founding day on September 16, and the birth anniversary of Periyar E V Ramasamy on September 17. The leadership views these celebrations as an opportunity to engage cadre and connect with younger demographics.
The committee may also discuss assigning a broader organisational post to Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, who currently serves as the DMK youth wing general secretary. With the three-month grace period for the ruling government drawing to a close, the meeting will outline the DMK's broader opposition strategy.
