District Judge S. Uma Maheswari Appointed Registrar of NGT Southern Zone Bench

District Judge S. Uma Maheswari has been appointed as the registrar of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Zone Bench, Chennai, on deputation for an initial period of one year.
The High Court of Madras issued an order relieving Uma Maheswari from her post as the presiding officer of the Additional Labour Court in Vellore to enable her to take charge of the new assignment at the NGT Southern Zone Bench. She was officially relieved from her judicial duties at the Vellore court on the afternoon of August 17.
The appointment was made following a formal request from the Registrar General of the NGT Principal Bench in New Delhi, seeking a suitable judicial officer to fill the registrar vacancy at the Southern Zone Bench.
To identify a candidate, the Madras High Court invited expressions of willingness from serving district judges within the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Judicial Services. Following a review of the eligible judicial officers, the High Court recommended Uma Maheswari for the post.
The Competent Authority of the National Green Tribunal subsequently accepted the High Court's recommendation and approved her appointment for a one-year tenure starting from the date she assumes charge.
The registrar post at the Southern Zone Bench had fallen vacant after the transfer of District Judge J. Sridevi. Sridevi had previously served as the registrar on deputation before being reassigned and posted as the Principal District Judge in Coimbatore.
