DGP Launches T-Shirt Manufacturing Unit for Inmates at Puzhal Prison

On Wednesday, Sandeep Rai Rathore, the Director-General of Prisons and Correctional Services, officially inaugurated a new T-shirt manufacturing vocational training unit for inmates at Central Prison-I, located in the Puzhal neighbourhood of Chennai. This new facility has been established as a key component of the State Prisons Department's ongoing rehabilitation and skill development programme for prison inmates.

The vocational training unit was set up in direct partnership with Rotary International District 3234. The primary objective of this collaboration is to equip the inmates with commercial garment manufacturing skills, thereby significantly improving their prospects of securing employment after their release from prison.

During his address to the gathering at the prison, Rathore highlighted the scale of the state's correctional system, noting that the state jails currently house more than 22,000 inmates across 125 different prisons. He emphasized that vocational training programs play a crucial role in preparing these individuals to lead a lawful livelihood once they are released back into society.

The newly launched T-shirt manufacturing unit is designed to provide inmates with hands-on, commercial garment manufacturing skills. By working in the unit, inmates will be able to gain practical work experience during the period of their imprisonment, which is expected to greatly enhance their overall employability after they complete their sentences in jail.

Through this partnership between the State Prisons Department and Rotary International District 3234, the program aims to deliver tangible rehabilitation opportunities, focusing on practical skills that support long-term rehabilitation and post-release employment.
